You’re Invited to a Shake Down Party

I’m Harry Munns, Chequessett Club Waterfront and Sailing Director. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a few members of the club’s sailing community. I’d like to meet the rest, so I’m trying to plan a get-together before the season begins in earnest.

We have had a productive pre-season. I’d like to show you what we’ve done and invite you to come sailing. My idea is to get as many people as possible to come to the boat house for a presentation of what we’ve done and more importantly (and more exciting) what we plan to do and want to do.

As you veteran CYCC sailors know, timing is everything. You’ll soon be able to access a complete waterfront calendar for the 2022 season on the club web site. The challenge with timing comes from the fact we need to share the space with summer camp, events and the beach club. More importantly for us, we need water and don’t always have it.

With all that in mind, I’ve tried to find an afternoon when we don’t have competition for waterfront space, and we do have water. Our first opportunity is;

Monday, June 20th, 5:00 PM. We have a ten-foot tide at 5:37 PM. 

The agenda, such as it is, will consist of a brief tour and explanation of the current state of the facility. I’ll do a quick dog and pony about where we stand with boats and related equipment. Then I’ll run through the schedule and point out the parts that might be of particular interest to you.

Now comes the good part. We will have 7 Optis and 5 Lasers sail-ready by that date. What we could use is some experienced sailors to help us shake down the fleet. That translates to free sailing although some of you will need to sail the Optis. (What a great opportunity to revisit your childhood!)

When we’re done, the club will open the bar and pay for some beer and wine. You’re on your own for everything else.

My goal is to make sure we identify any problems with the boats we plan to use for camp, rentals, instruction and (dare I say) racing. I’m also eager to get your input. You know all about how things worked in the past. I can learn a lot from you.

If you have other people who might benefit from the tour and presentation but who are not yet ready to jump in a boat and sail away, invite them. We plan to offer instruction throughout the summer. Everyone is welcome.
