Dear Members:
As you have no doubt heard, work has finally begun on the long-awaited Herring River project. After decades of study and planning, construction has begun on a temporary bridge on Chequessett Neck Road and the town of Wellfleet has hired MIG Corporation of Acton, to remove a portion of the existing dike and to build a new bridge equipped with sluice gates. The sluice gates will control the rate of tidal exchange between Wellfleet Harbor and the Herring River estuary.
As part of the project, fill from several locations on our golf course will be removed to raise low-lying town roads around the estuary and to raise the height of holes 6, 7, and 8 so that they will no longer be subject to flooding. In all, seven of the nine holes on our course will be rebuilt, and once the work is complete, members will enjoy an exciting new golf experience at Chequessett.
The excavation of fill and rebuilding of the golf course will require that we close the Club to golf while the work is ongoing. As yet, we do not have a timeline for when the closures will take place. However, we do know with certainty that we will be open for golf for the 2023 season. Updated plans for the new golf course are expected to be ready this summer after which the project will be put out to bid. The cost to redo the golf course will be offset by payments for the fill we will provide to the project.
Because of uncertainties around contractor availability, supply lines and other parts of the project not in our control, we do not yet know when the work will actually begin. We are hoping to have a timeline to present to the members at the annual meeting in August. In the meantime, we will post any updates on the project to our website. You may also check the town of Wellfleet website for their project updates. (Their latest news release is here).
If you have any questions you may email the board of governors at. Thank you – and see you at the Club soon!
